Flights

Flights divide the field into competitive divisions so golfers play against others of similar ability or profile — a Championship flight for low handicaps, an A / B / C split, a Seniors flight, a women’s flight, and so on. Each flight gets its own leaderboard, its own placement payouts, and its own contests. Use flights whenever a single overall leaderboard would let one group of golfers sweep every prize.

Flights live on their own tab in the tournament navigation.

Creating flights

  1. Click Add flight (top right). To start from a saved configuration, click Load from template inside the form.
  2. Enter a Flight name (e.g. “Championship Flight”).
  3. Choose a Flight type — Handicap, Age, Gender, Professional, Member Status, or Custom. Picking a type seeds a matching starter qualification rule.
  4. Choose an Assignment methodAutomatic (the engine places golfers by rule) or Manual (you place every golfer yourself).
  5. Choose a Category — Individual, Twosome Team, or Foursome Team.
  6. On a multi-day tournament, optionally scope the flight to a single Tournament day, or leave it on Total — all rounds.
  7. Optionally set a Color, a Description, and a Scoring basis override (Net or Gross, regardless of the tournament’s normal basis).
  8. Optionally mark the flight as an Overlay flight — every qualifying golfer competes in it alongside their primary flight (use this for an “Overall” leaderboard). Overlay flights skip the assignment engine.
  9. Build the Qualification rules. All rules must match (AND logic); add an exclude rule to carve golfers out.
  10. Click Create flight.

Flight priority

Flights are ranked by priority, shown as Priority #1, #2, and so on down the list. A golfer is assigned to the first flight they qualify for, top to bottom, so if a golfer’s stats match more than one flight the higher-priority flight wins. Drag a flight card to reorder priority. A catch-all “All Golfers” flight should always sit last.

Assigning golfers

For automatic flights, the assignment engine reads each golfer’s stats, tests them against every flight’s rules in priority order, and proposes a placement. Manually placed and locked golfers are skipped and keep their current flight.

  1. Click Assign golfers on the assignment banner to open the Assignment Preview modal.
  2. Review the proposed flight sizes, the golfers in each flight, and the Changes Since Last Assignment summary. Nothing is written until you accept.
  3. Check the callouts:
    • Unassigned — golfers who match no flight. Expand “Why?” for a rule-by-rule trace against every flight.
    • Rule Overlaps Detected — golfers who match multiple flights; the preview shows which flight they were assigned to and why.
    • Skipped (manually placed) — golfers who were placed by hand and were not re-evaluated.
  4. Click Re-run after editing rules, or Accept assignments to apply.

To override a single golfer, edit their flight from the roster or use the move controls; locking a golfer keeps the engine from moving them on the next run.

Tip: If a flight is coming out lopsided, the Flights page offers **Balance flight sizes** and **Balance flights** panels that suggest either moving individual golfers or nudging a handicap cutoff, with a one-click apply and undo.

Team flights

Twosome and Foursome flights have no per-golfer assignments. Their membership is resolved live from the Pairings page — each team’s combined handicap decides which team flight it lands in — so the preview shows team flight counts broken out per day rather than a single total. Build your teams on the Pairings page.

Per-flight prizes

A flight can carry its own placement payouts and its own contests. Flight-scoped prizes and flight-scoped contests render under that flight on the Flights tab of the Prize Allocation screen — they are never duplicated on the Contests tab, which shows tournament-wide contests only. A day pays out per-flight team prizes only when at least one flight has team prizes configured for that day; otherwise the tournament-wide behavior is unchanged.

Flight colors carry through the season

The Color you set on a flight is reused everywhere that flight appears — its leaderboard tab, its payout tables, and the season standings and public season leaderboard screens — so a golfer can track their division at a glance across every view.
